On Monday, Aug. 21, all of the contiguous United States will be able to witness the solar eclipse as it cuts its path east-southeast from Madras, Oregon to Columbia, South Carolina – and folks from coast to coast are preparing once-in-a-lifetime viewing parties with stellar snacks and libations.
For those a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by (they haven’t), Zachary Blair, chief mixologist at the rustically elegant Whiteface Lodge resort in Lake Placid, New York – where the eclipse will be 62.2% total – has added the “Bonnie Tyler” to the cocktail menu at Kanu Lounge:
Add to shaker:
1 egg white
2 oz. tequila
1 oz. heavy cream
.5 oz. lime juice
.5 oz. simple syrup
Shake with ice. Double-strain. Top with 3 oz. sparkling water. Add 2 dashes of chocolate mole bitters. Garnish with crescent moon coffee grounds and chocolate shavings.
In Midtown Manhattan, just off the Theater District and Times Square – where the eclipse will be 71.4% total – Gaby Bar in the Sofitel New York will serve “To the Cherry and Back” Friday, Aug. 18 through Aug. 21. In this recipe – a fresh take on the Kir Royale – a white cherry disappears and reappears, echoing the sun disappearance and reemergence from the shadow of the moon. Naturally, it’s served with a side of eclipse glasses!
Place a white cherry in a Champagne glass
1 oz. of Cassis – just enough to submerge the white cherry
Pour the Champagne, and the white cherry will reappear.
